Arten Gill viaduct with engineering train
Arten Gill viaduct with engineering train
Whilst waiting for the northbound 15 Guinea Special at Arten Gill on the Settle to Carlisle line a couple of southbound diesel-hauled trains went by. This is the more interesting: an engineering train hauled by a Sulzer Type 2 Diesel (later classified as Class 25).
Arten Gill Viaduct

11 arches, 117 ft high, 220 yards long.
Arten Gill Viaduct is built of massive blocks of Dent ‘marble’, from the now-disused quarries nearby. This stone was popular for use in ornamental masonry and was remarkable for its wealth of fossils.
The viaduct carries the Settle to Carlisle line over Arten Gill Beck.
