The keep, known as "The Little Castle" built by William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, completed 1621
Bolsover Castle

The manor and 12th century castle at Bolsover were purchased by Sir Charles Cavendish, son of Bess of Hardwick in 1608. Sir Charles began re-building the mediŠval castle, a process continued by his son William Cavendish, later 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne. Despite its appearance, the castle was designed for elegant living rather than defence. The keep, known today as the 'Little Castle', was completed around 1621. The castle was slighted by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War but was restored to good order by the time of William Cavendishĺs death in 1676.
After 1883 the castle became uninhabited and given to the nation by its then-owner, the 7th Duke of Portland in 1945. The castle is now managed by English Heritage LinkExternal link . It is a Grade I listed building (List entry Number: 1108976 LinkExternal link Historic England) and scheduled ancient monument.
