NO5205 : Inscription above the entrance to Kellie Castle

taken 7 months ago, near to Arncroach, Fife, Scotland

Inscription above the entrance to Kellie Castle
Inscription above the entrance to Kellie Castle
Above the door on the east side of the original west tower is engraved:-

HOC DOMICILIUM CORVIS ET BUBONIBUS EREPTUM
HONESTO INTER LABORES OTIO CONSECRATUM EST
A.S. MDCCCLXXVIII J.A.L.

which, loosely translated by Google, can read:-

This abode, freed from ravens and crows,
was consecrated to an honourable leisure between labours

which is, presumably, a reference to the rescue of the buildings from decay and abandonment by the Lorimers, which began when James A Lorimer took over the derelict building in 1878.
