Beamish Open Air Museum - winding engine
Beamish Open Air Museum - winding engine
A genuine Durham vertical winding engine house and head gear that was relocated from a short distance away. The house contains a Durham vertical winding engine to Crowther's patent and built in 1855 by J & G Joicey.
This view is of the winding drum and flywheel on the top floor. In 1981 the public were allowed upstairs while the engine was working but that practice ceased long ago. I was allowed up there some 20 years ago on a day when the museum was closed and I was being shown around by a curator.
