Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Peppercorn Lane, Kendal
Grade I Listed hall of 1759 by John Carr (1723–1807) for Colonel George Wilson. It changed hands several times before it was sold in 1897 to Kendal Borough Council who wanted to transform the grounds into a public park. Falling into disrepair by the 1950s it was facing demolition. A local group formed a charitable trust who restored and reopened it as an art gallery in September 1962. It closed in February 2020 for essential renovation works and reopened 20 May 2023 with a more diverse outlook as a cultural and community hub.
