BESS - Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming more common. They are a quick way of 'topping up' electricity supplied to the national grid at very short notice to cope with surges in the demand for electrical power by consumers. They use Lithium-Ion batteries (similar to that used in such devices as mobile phones but of a larger 'industrial' grade) to store electricity from (usually) commercial wind farms or large solar panel arrays during periods of low demand and release that electricity at times of peak demand LinkExternal link
