The Category A listed LinkExternal link Dornoch Cathedral is Scotland's smallest cathedral and the most northerly cathedral on the British mainland. It was founded by St Gilbert Murray (de Moravia) in 1224. It was Damaged by fire in 1570. The chancel, transept and tower were restored in 1616 by Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun. Building of the spire commenced in 1728 but was still unfinished in 1732. Rebuilding of nave and complete restoration took place in 1835-37, financed by Countess Elizabeth Dowager Duchess of Sutherland. Further restoration took place in 1924. Although originally Catholic it is now simply the Church of Scotland Parish Church of Dornoch.
