Introduced in the early 1980s, these trains have been the bane of commuters for 40 years, but all had been withdrawn from the main line by 2021. However, some have found a new lease of life on smaller heritage lines, where they are appreciated for their economy and ease of maintenance. No doubt these are the reasons why they survived for so long on the national network.
