This abutment is all that is visible of the old bridge which carried the Gatebeck Tramway. This 3 ft 6 in gauge horse-drawn tramway ran from the main line at Milnthorpe to the gunpowder works at Gatebeck, with branches to wharves on the canal. See, for example, LinkExternal link
