History of Limes Land Tenterden Link
The Weald refers to the area of Kent, Sussex and the southern edges of Surrey that is bordered to the north by the North Down ridge and to the south by the South Down ridge. Some of it still remains forested, notably in the areas along the Forest Ridge from Midhurst in West Sussex to Fairlight Cliff on the coast near Hastings, including St Leonards Forest, Tilgate Forest, Worth Forest, Ashdown Forest, Bedgebury Forest, Dallington Forest and Vinehall Forest, as well as hundreds of woodlands. Much of the area is contained in the High Weald AONB Link
, created in 1983 under the National Park and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949.
The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretches east-west from Rye in East Sussex to Horsham in West Sussex. The 1461km2 area covers adjoining parts of Kent, Sussex and Surrey. Link
