The Blackgate, Newcastle
The Blackgate, Newcastle
This is the barbican and gatehouse for the castle at Newcastle. The castle dates from 1172-77, and the barbican was added in 1247-50. In 1618 it was leased to a Patrick Black, which is where the name comes from. Very rundown by the 19th century it was purchased by the Society of Antiquaries in 1880 and restored. This included adding the top floor and the pitched roof.
