NZ2563 : The castle keep, Newcastle

taken 11 months ago, near to Gateshead, England

The castle keep, Newcastle
The castle keep, Newcastle
The keep was built by Henry II in 1172-77, to replace an earlier motte and bailey wooden castle. Note how the Victorian railway viaduct cuts right through the site, and led to most of the rest of the castle being demolished. The spire of St Nicholas's cathedral can be seen on the right.
