According to the plaque outside Lloyd's Bank SO0428 : Lloyd's Bank, Brecon it was "Founded by Walter and Jeffrey Wilkins to finance the drovers and iron masters of South Wales and to pay the wages for the iron foundries of Cyfarthfa, Penydarren and Dowlais at Merthyr and the Abernant works at Aberdare. It promoted construction of the Brecon and Glamorgan canals and the 18S9 Brecon to Merthyr railway. In 1890 it merged with Lloyd's Bank".
