Ireland's first female aviator Sophia Theresa Catherine Mary Peirce-Evans, later Lady Mary Heath, better known as Sophie Peirce, is commemorated on this wall plaque of the AIB bank in Newcastle West.

The date on the memorial is incorrect, as Sophie was born at Knockaderry House, Link Newcastle West on 17th November 1896. She led a memorable if at times an unhappy life, marrying three times, achieving much in the 1920s and thirties, and was a volunteer ambulance driver during the First World War.
