Ruins of Bolts Law Standing Engine House
Built in 1846 by the Weardale Iron Company, the railway line into Rookhope from Tow Law was the highest-ever standard-gauge railway in the UK. Its purpose was to haul iron ore and limestone from the Rookhope terminus to Tow Law Ironworks along with pigs of lead to the Tyne. Coal was brought as return freight.
The Standing Engine provided power to haul railway trucks up and down the incline on the end of a cable. It remained in operation until 1923.
The consolidation of Bolt's Law Engine House was completed in 2011.
