Close up of the Dorking Cockerel, the symbol of Dorking, which was installed on 5 February 2007, having been commissioned by Neil Maltby, a previous chairman of Mole Valley District Council. Made of galvanized steel, it was created by blacksmith Peter Parkinson at the Fire & Iron Gallery in Leatherhead. For a wider view see
TQ1749 : Deepdene Roundabout.
The statue regularly attracts the attention of a group of guerrilla knitters based in Dorking, particularly at Christmas, Easter and royal and sporting events. Originally the decorations were frowned on by officialdom, but now they seem to be accepted as a welcome tradition.
Here the sculpture is sporting a gold medal to commemorate the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
