Old milestone
Old milestone
The milestone, 2 miles south west of Sedbergh, is in a small lay-by with, to the east, Holme Open Farm. Although now in Cumbria this northern part of the road to Kirkby Lonsdale was, before 1974, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. By the early 19thC there were 62 miles of tollroad controlled by the Sedbergh Turnpike Trust. The milestones on this route and other routes around the town are very similar in shape so may have been set up for the Trust.
