Monks and once the theatre – Grassington, North Yorkshire
Monks and once the theatre – Grassington, North Yorkshire
Grassington was once on the route of monks who would travel between Fountains Abbey and Malham. It was a centre of the lead mining industry until 1875 when the trade died out from the place. It had a theatre, converted from a barn, and some plays featured the actor Edmund Kean (born in Westminster, London on 4th November 1789). He was a tragic actor and took on a number of Shakespearean roles. Here in the square stands the Grassington House Hotel, of about 1760, and a Folk Museum. Thanks are due to Bob Harvey and David Pugh for locating this one. This photo was taken on the day of a railtour organised by the Gloucestershire-based Pathfinder Tours of Woodchester, Stroud.
