Fossil tree stump at Stanhope
Fossil tree stump at Stanhope
This is in the churchyard of St Thomas's church in the town centre. It's the fossilised stump of a giant Sigillaria from the Carboniferous era about 320 million years ago. This was an early member of the present day club mosses, which are now small plants. The fossil was found in a quarry at Edmonbyers Cross, on the moors north of Stanhope.
