Croquet Lawn, Backworth Hall (Now Backworth Miners' Welfare Hall)
Set amongst a stunning backdrop of 85 acres of land, 1778-built Backworth Hall was designed by William Newton for Ralph William Grey, a wealthy landowner and gentleman. Constructed of sand-stone ashlar with a graduated Lakeland slate roof, Venetian doorway and rendered chimneys, it has a basement and 2 storeys. It is a Grade II Listed Building. As well as being able to play croquet at Backworth Hall, there is also a golf course with the hall itself a popular wedding venue.
