This railway line runs from London Waterloo to Weymouth. The route passes through Woking, Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth, Wareham and Dorchester. The line opened in 1838.

The New Forest is an area characterised by open pasture and ancient heathland as well as woodland. It covers more than 550 square kilometres, mostly in Hampshire although parts of it are in Wiltshire. Roughly two-thirds of The New Forest is within the New Forest National Park, which was designated as a National Park in 2005.

The National Park extends beyond the heaths and woodlands to include a stretch of coastline along the north side of The Solent.

The forest includes a large number of inclosures. These are managed woodlands which have been developed for timber production. The inclosures cover 84 square kilometres. The oldest ones date from the 18th Century.
