Contemplation among the greats
Inside the ambulatory are four carved heads, believed to represent Julius Caesar, Nero, Hannibal and Attila. Why they are here is unknown but there is the thought that Dr William Knight had them installed to help with any deep contemplations. Knight was a prominent man in Henry VIII's court, travelling to Rome and negotiating the king's divorce from Catherine of Aragon amongst other duties. He later became Bishop of Bath and Wells, but had to surrender the property here at Horton Court.
