The Fat Ox, Whitley Bay
This public house was named after the famous animal, reared by a certain Edward Hall, which was killed on 18th March 1789 by Thomas Horsley, butcher of Westgate Newcastle, and which weighed 216 stones 8 lbs. In his fine 1893-published book entitled, 'Historical Notes on Cullercoats Whitley and Monkseaton ', William Weaver Tomlinson, said that the "Fat Ox Inn" was "thirty or forty years ago thatched and picturesque of aspect, and was a favourite resort of picnic parties driving from Newcastle." This particular version of the public house, a replacement for the earlier building, was built in 1923.
