Ilex Mill and the River Irwell
The cotton mill dates back to 1856, reaching its peak of production in 1895 with 748 looms.
It was converted into a shoe factory soon after, but was once again concerned with textile production in the 1930's.
After various plans in the 1970's and 1980's, the building fell empty for 15 years.
It now appears to have been converted into living accommodation.

River Irwell
The River Irwell rises on the Rossendale hills north of Bacup and flows south for 39 miles before joining the River Mersey west of Manchester. It was a very important river in the development of industry, during the Industrial revolution, in Lancashire.
