Beacon House, Western Way, Whitley Bay
The 11-storey tower block is an elegant example of the work of Gordon Ryder and Peter Yates, two pioneering young architects who worked with and were influenced by Le Corbusier, Berthold Lubetkin, and Ove Arup. The building features two tiled elevations, refined balconies, and a curved shell around the entrance. In 1954 builder James Liddell commissioned four 11-storey blocks to be constructed in a large green open space sheltered by earth sculptures. Beacon House was the first of these four blocks and were completed in 1959. The remaining three blocks were never in fact completed.
