Hi,
The statue is "The Emigrants". It was donated by the Mormon Church to mark the many Mormons who emigrated via Liverpool from all over Europe. Their journey was replicated by some tall ships around the year 2000.
Although there is a plaque on the nearby wall about the Great Famine, the statue is not connected- the well dressed and well-fed Mormons do not resemble victims of the Famine.
The Famine is commemorated by an artwork and plaques in the gardens of St. Luke's Church. There is another plaque near the Catholic Cathedral which stands on the site of the former Workhouse where so many victims died.
Hope this is helpful
Best Wishes
