Funtington Churchyard: grave of Richard Churcher
Richard Churcher was born in Funtington, West Sussex and apprenticed to John Jacob, an eminent citizen and barber-surgeon of London from 1675 to 1682 . Subsequently he joined the East India Company and went to India where he made his fortune. He founded Churcher's College in Petersfield, Hampshire. His will, dated 1722, decreed that the College was to educate '10 or 12 local boys from Petersfield, of any age from 9 to 14, in the arts of writing, arithmetic, mathematics and navigation so they could be apprenticed to masters of ships sailing in the East Indies'. In 1972 the school celebrated its 250th anniversary by letting in the least promising pupil they ever had, one Basher Eyre of this parish. Despite this, they survived to celebrate their 300th birthday in 2022 LinkExternal link
