Black Swan Court was created by removing the overbuilding of Pearson's Court, a courtyard behind Westgate Road, to make part of the Newcastle Arts Centre. During the creation of the court, staff at Newcastle Arts Centre excavated the foundations of a Roman Milecastle, abandoned wells, and a large collection of medieval pottery. The milecastle is known as the "Westgate Road Milecastle" and is located on the presumed line of the Roman Wall. The buildings at the back of the courtyard were converted into studios and workshops for artists and craft workers. The Arts Centre was officially opened by Prince Charles (King Charles III) in 1988.
