Cowan Bridge is a village south-east of the town of Kirkby Lonsdale, where the main A65 road crosses the Leck Beck. The village is village most notable for its association with the Brontė Sisters Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Emily having attended the Clergy Daughters' School LinkExternal link there in 1824. Charlotte Brontė described the abuses they suffered at the school, the typhus epidemic in which seven pupils died, the scandal which followed, and subsequent reform of the school in her novel Jane Eyre LinkExternal link .
