Geograph - photograph every grid square

Mick Garratt's photo [Brick Structure near to Kirby Hall] actually shows an ice house, almost certainly dating from the 18th century, as this is when the nearby Kirby Hall was constructed. The ice house was a common feature of country house parkland, and was usually sited near a lake or pond, from where ice could be taken in winter and stored in the ice house for later use in helping to preserve food. Kirby Hall is now gone, but the ice house and nearby mausoleum remain. There are ice houses in several other Yorkshire parks [two in Studley park near Ripon for example], and a well preserved one on the outer bank of the city wall in York.
