The Iron Bridge from the north bank of the River Severn
The Iron Bridge spans the River Severn in Shropshire. It was opened to traffic in 1781 and was the first major cast iron bridge in the world. The bridge crosses the Ironbridge Gorge with a main span of 30.6 mtrs (100 ft) which allows clearance for sailing boats to pass underneath. The village of Ironbridge developed at the north end of the bridge.
In 1934 it was closed to vehicular traffic and in 1950 ownership was transferred to Shropshire County Council and then to Telford and Wrekin Council. It is now under the supervision of The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust who have secured funds to repair and maintain the bridge.
The bridge was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1934. The bridge, the village of Ironbridge and the Ironbridge Gorge form the UNESCO Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, which was created in 1986. The bridge is also a Grade I listed structure.
