North Side of ‘Blackwell’, The Arts and Crafts House
Built in 1898-1900 and located a short distance uphill from the east shore of Lake Windermere, Link Blackwell has been a Grade I listed building since 2001, Link
when the owner, Lakeland Arts, opened it to the public. Link
Blackwell was a holiday home for Sir Edward Holt, a Manchester brewery owner. Holts remains an independent, family-owned brewery, still brewing beer on the original site that opened in 1860 on Empire Street off Cheetham Hill Road.
In this photograph, the large door to the right is the original main entrance that the Holt family would have used. It is no longer in everyday use. Today, visitors to this historic house use the public entrance tucked away in the far corner behind the stone wall. Historic England describes the house as “Faced with painted roughcast walls with stone dressings” and “in Vernacular Revival style.” Link
