Detail, Former Main Entrance to ‘Blackwell’, The Arts and Crafts House
Historic England describes Blackwell as “Faced with painted roughcast walls with stone dressings …”, both of which are evident in this photograph. Link
The dressings are the ashlar (cut and dressed) sandstone, further enhanced here with the finely carved rose. Is it a Tudor rose? Is it a Lancastrian rose? Perhaps it's just a rose.
This photograph complements another that shows the former main entrance in its setting on the north side of the house. Link
