High Bridge at its junction with Bigg Market
High Bridge at its junction with Bigg Market
Looking north along High Bridge which linked the market with Pilgrim Street from medieval times. The name comes from the long gone bridge which went over the Lort Burn in the middle of the lane. This was culverted in the late 17th century. The Beehive Hotel on the right dates from 1902 by J Oswald and Son for Newcastle Breweries, although there had been an earlier Beehive on the site. Of interest are the granite setts in the road, which could be original.
