The Duke of Wellington pub
The Duke of Wellington pub
On High Bridge in Newcastle city centre. A very well known and popular pub, it dates from early 19th century perhaps but may be older. High Bridge is a medieval street, but little remains from that time. The pub is chiefly famous for one of its landlords in Victorian times. In 1877 William Campbell from Glasgow and his wife took over the pub. He was famous for his enormous size and claimed to be the heaviest man in the world. He stood 6ft 3in tall (some sources claim 6ft 8in) and weighed 52 stone. Wife Polly ran the pub as William was in poor heath. Indeed he died in 1878 aged just 22. A section of wall had to be knocked down so that his coffin could be lowered from the upstairs bedroom to the hearse in the street. A crowd of 1000's of people watched the spectacle and huge crowds attended his burial.
