This is where the pipe pumping sewage overland around the works reconnects (presumably) to an existing sewer in the open grassland below Morris Lane. The use of valves on a sewer line is unusual but was probably to ensure no flow in the pipeline until it was completed.

This open space was part of the medieval precincts of Kirkstall Abbey, and forms part of the scheduled ancient monument area, as it is believed there will be archaeological remains beneath it. So presumably permission was needed for this excavation.
