45 068 heads a train of modern freight wagons, the first being a BOC tank wagon for compressed gas.
Including the similar 44 & 46 classes a total of 193 of these Sulzer-engined 1Co-Co1 diesel-electric locos were built at the BR workshops at Derby and Crewe between 1959 and 1963. All had been withdrawn by 1989 with 16 saved by enthusiasts. Originally numbered D1 - D193 they were colloquially known as 'Peaks' because of the names bestowed on the first 10 (of Class 44).
