Memorial to Lt George Burdon McKean
Memorial to Lt George Burdon McKean
Lt George Burdon McKean was born in Willington Co. Durham, later emigrating to Canada as a child with his family. He earned the Victoria Cross in April 1918 for a raid on enemy trenches. After the end of the war he settled in England and was tragically killed in an industrial accident aged 38. As well as the Willington memorial, he has a town square named after him in Cagnicourt, France, and a portion of the Victoria Cross mountain range in Canada dedicated to him.
