Former shoe shop in the Groat Market
Former shoe shop in the Groat Market
The Groat Market is an old street in Newcastle's city centre. The Meat Stack burger bar at Nos 41-43 has an interesting history. Originally it was probably an 18th century building, greatly modified in the 19th and 20th centuries . The present front probably dates to 1928, and the shop front is recent. For almost 130 years, from 1879-2007, this was the premises of George Rye and Sons, who made and sold shoes. Mostly gentleman's leather ones. After they closed, it became a betting shop for a few years and then the burger bar.
