NM0446 : Kirkapol Church of Scotland / Eaglais ChirceapoilNM0446 : Kirkapol Church of Scotland / Eaglais ChirceapoilEnd of the road for Kirkapol ChurchIn December 2013 Kirkapol Church was officially closed. These days the care and upkeep of old churches entails great expense, and with the decline in congregational numbers some would maintain that the Church of Scotland has too many buildings.
The pulpit Bible and the baptismal font were removed from the church after the final service. The furniture from Kirkapol Church has been retained by
NL9643 : Heylipol Church where the services are now held.
The preacher at the service was Professor Donald Meek, who grew up about three miles from Kirkapol Church and has many fond memories of it. Although he belonged to the Baptist congregation there was warm fellowship and friendship between the two denominations on the island and Professor Meek's father often preached at Kirkapol.
