'Collingwood Mansions' (Former Northumberland Arms), New Quay, North Shields
This elegant building belongs to a scheme designed by Newcastle architect David Stephenson for the 2nd Duke of Northumberland, who laid the foundation stone in October 1806. An 1810 watercolour by famous North Shields architect John Dobson, then an apprentice to David Stephenson, shows three ranges of buildings round a square open to the quay. However, the only part that was completed (in 1817) was a monumental ashlar-faced twenty bay terrace of which the Northumberland Arms was the five bay centre block. This building is the only part of the built terrace which has survived and is now residential accommodation. It is a Grade II Listed building.
