Bello Sguardo at the top of the 99 steps is built on the site of Saint Michael's Chapel where there was said to have been a small cave where a hermit once lived "beneath le Malvern Hyll". This hermitage would have been in the wilderness of Malvern Chase, before Malvern Priory was founded, a good mile or more from any other living soul. The seed of Great Malvern.
