Opened in 1864 by the Blyth & Tyne Railway the station closed in 1978 when the Tyne & Wear Metro was built, with the new Jesmond Metro Station nearby. It was converted into a public house with an adjoining railway carriage and signal box housing a restaurant. The former station is Grade II Listed and is notable as being the last surviving station of the Blyth and Tyne Railway. It was described in the 1992 edition of Pevsner's 'Buildings of England Northumberland' as being, "a good example of a small suburban station in Tudor style, single-storey, in red brick with stone dressings".
