St. Saviour's Dock, 1984
St. Saviour's Dock, so-called, is a narrow tidal inlet off the Thames that once formed the mouth of the River Neckinger. Charles Dickens located the slum-fortress of Jacob's Island here, which plays a key role in the plot of "Oliver Twist". At this time London's dock industry had largely deserted the city but renovation and gentrification of the areas had yet to happen.
A 2018 view at TQ3379 : St Saviour's Dock indicates that the warehouses on the left survived, brought into residential use with the addition of balconies, while those near the camera on the right were replaced by a new residential development.
