Spit Sand Fort, armament passage
This is one of two circular passages running inside the lowest level of the fort, with armament rooms off to the right. It is always cold down here, so was the ideal place to store the armaments for whichever guns were in favour at the time.
Spit Bank Fort was built in 1867-68, one of 'Palmerston's Follies' - a number of coastal defences constructed in response to France expanding its navy and 'sabre rattling'. In fact the Follies were never challenged hence their sobriquet!
