From Spit Sand Fort
From Spit Sand Fort
Looking south-west from Spit Sand Fort towards Ryde. The fort was manned by 24 soldiers. It was not a popular assignment. They had one day a week shore leave, cancelled if weather conditions prevented them from leaving. It is said the soldiers preferred to take their shore leave in Ryde, Isle of Wight, rather than Portsmouth as they had less competition from the sailors for the ladies of the town.
