RAF Fylingdales pre-1992
Opened in 1962, RAF Fylingdales is primarily a ballistic missile early warning station, with a secondary duty of detecting, reporting and tracking satellite launches and orbits. The famous "golf ball" radomes seen here were replaced between 1989 and 1992 by the pyramid - like Solid State Phased Array Radar (SSPAR), which became operational in October 1992.
