Disused turbine on display at Elan Valley Visitor Centre
Located close to the visitor centre. A plaque SN9264 : Info at the base on the plinth records that the hydroelectric turbine was one of two in use between 1952 and 1995, installed on opposite sides on the nearby River Elan, below Caban Coch dam. It generated 200 horsepower (150 kilowatts). 68 million litres of water passed through it daily. The new turbine installed in the turbine house on the south side of the River Elan generates 800 kilowatts - enough to power 800 homes.
It was green when Bill Nicholls photographed it in 2008 and when Jaggery photographed it in 2012 SN9264 : Disused turbine on display at Elan Valley Visitor Centre but had been painted blue by the time Fabian Musto saw it in 2020 SN9264 : Disused turbine by the Elan Valley Visitor Centre.
Chris Allen photographed a turbine in 1998 SN9264 : Water Turbine, Elan Valley Visitor Centre and commented "This 1952 turbine by Gilbert, Gilkes & Gordon of Kendal was in use until 1952 in one of the two Caban Coch powerhouses. It produced 150 kW and 68 million litres per day of water were passed through it. There is now a new 800 kW turbine. I am intrigued that this seems to be two machines of different types on one shaft. On the left is an outward flow radial flow machine with variable inlet guides (eg a Francis turbine) while on the right is what appears to be a pelton wheel impulse type turbine. I wouldn't have thought these were usual bedfellows."

Elan Valley Reservoirs
The dams and reservoirs of the Elan Estate are situated within an area of outstanding scenic beauty. They provide a lasting amenity in their own right for visitors to enjoy.
The protection of the water catchment to prevent pollution of the reservoirs has safeguarded the habitats of numerous species of flora and fauna.
However, it should be remembered that the dams were built to provide for a very basic need....water for the people of Birmingham.
