Geograph - photograph every grid square

Work started on building the town walls in 1285. They were mostly complete by 1346 but work continued on them until 1400. The walls (fronted with cut flint) were just over 2km long and were 7m high. There were 10 gates and 16 towers (mostly D-shaped). From the mid-17th century the walls were allowed to decay and between 1776 and 1812 all 10 gates were pulled down. Seven towers survive largely intact and the remains of four more can be seen. They are amongst the best preserved mediaeval walls in England and they are a scheduled monument.
