Replica Victorian pillar box outside the Old Town Hall
The first roadside pillar box in mainland Britain was erected in 1853 at Botchergate NY4055 : Former Post Office, Botchergate. The early boxes did not have a standard design, and we have not yet found an illustration of the original one in Carlisle. The box in this photo is a copy of the Penfold design, produced between 1866-79. It is one of many replica Penfolds produced in 1989, to be placed in historic and tourist locations LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) . For details of inscription, see NY4055 : Commemorative plaque on replica pillar box.
